Using these symbols in your single-line diagram

1

Find the symbol

The symbol library sits to the left of the drawing sheet. Its search field knows the same names and synonyms as this page.

2

Place it on the diagram

Click the symbol, then click where it belongs in the diagram. 1wire makes the connection and keeps the circuit numbering up to date.

3

Fill in the properties

Poles, current rating, cable type or water resistance are set per symbol. The manual explains more.

Questions about single-line diagram symbols

Which symbols are used in a single-line diagram?

A single-line diagram shows every circuit from the distribution board to the last appliance: the protection (circuit breaker, RCD or fuse), the cable and the connected components such as sockets, switches, light points and appliances. This page lists every symbol you can use for that in 1wire.

Do these symbols comply with the AREI?

1wire draws the symbols the way they are used in Belgian single-line diagrams under the AREI, the Belgian electrical regulations. A diagram is only complete when the properties are right as well: number of poles, current rating, cable type and cross-section. You fill these in per symbol in 1wire.

What is the difference between a two-way switch and an intermediate switch?

With two two-way switches you control one light point from two places, for example at the top and bottom of a staircase. To control it from three or more places, you put one or more intermediate switches between the two two-way switches. With many control points, an impulse switch with push buttons is often simpler.

What is the difference between a circuit breaker and an RCD?

A circuit breaker protects a circuit against overload and short circuits. A differential switch (RCD) protects against leakage currents to earth, and so against electric shock. On the single-line diagram you draw them separately, each with its own properties such as current rating, sensitivity (for example 30 mA or 300 mA) and type.

How do I find a symbol in 1wire?

Type its name in the search field of the symbol library. Just like on this page, 1wire recognises synonyms too. Click the symbol and place it on your diagram.

What if the symbol I need is missing?

Use the general appliance symbol and write its name next to it. Please also tell us which symbol you are missing through the contact form, so we can look into adding it.

Do I also need a floor plan next to the single-line diagram?

Yes. For the inspection of a residential installation, the single-line diagram comes with a floor plan that shows where each component is. In 1wire you place the components of your single-line diagram directly on the floor plan.
